Robert Shapiro, an accomplished actor, musician, and singer/songwriter, offers poignant nostalgia and insightful commentary on The Lilal Network Live From Hollywood during a look back at Wattstax, the 1973 music documentary directed by Mel Stuart.

Organized by powerhouse Memphis record label Stax Records, the Wattstax music festival took place on August 20, 1972 at the Los Angeles Coliseum to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the LA Watts Riots of 1965.

Imagine attending an all-star Stax concert for only $1 featuring the likes of Isaac Hayes, The Bar-Kays, The Staple Singers, Johnnie Taylor, Rufus Thomas, Kim Weston, Albert King, and a host of other artists hitting the same stage!  That's Wattstax!

Director Mel Stuart does a masterful job of capturing a once-in-a-lifetime concert event, while giving voice to a post Dr. Martin Luther King Jr./civil rights generation as they explore a myriad of subjects including past, present, and future notions of self-awareness, self-determination, and cultural identity.

Featuring a soul stirring invocation by the Reverend Jesse Jackson and interviews with comedic genius Richard Pryor and actor Ted Lange, Wattstax is a music lover's dream and movie buff's gem.  Among concert films and/or the genre of music documentaries, Wattstax is a timeless piece of art that is just as relevant today as it was in the early 1970s.  Simply put, Wattstax is one the best concert films/music documentaries ever made.

The Lilal Network is proud to celebrate BrittiCares Int'l and the 6th Annual Brittiana Smile For Life 5K Run/Walk!

Created by childhood cancer activist and humanitarian Brittiana Rene Henderson as a pre-teen, BrittiCares Int'l is dedicated to "Helping Children Survive Cancer One Smile At A Time."

As a resilient cancer patient, Brittiana thoroughly understood what it felt like to battle and live with cancer.

At 10 years of age, Brittiana was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer).  She later went into remission for 14 months before developing leukemia at the age of 12.  Following a valiant one year fight with leukemia, Brittiana passed away.

According to her loving father and mother, Jamie and Shirell Henderson, it was rare to find Brittiana without a smile on her face while enduring the painful challenges of her cancer.  Mr. and Mrs. Henderson affectionately recall that Brittiana would often say, "I'm smiling because I'm living."

This is precisely the same smile Brittiana worked tirelessly to put on the faces of other children battling cancer, while in the midst of her own cancer struggles.

Today, BrittiCares Int'l continues its mission of assisting children living with cancer and helping their families combat the emotional obstacles that accompany sickness and its uncertainties through a variety of programs designed to create awareness, uplifting support, and family involvement.

BCI believes that "Every Life Has a Purpose, And Every Child Deserves The Opportunity To Smile."  Some of BCI's programs and events include:

  • Imagine Me Programs - Celebrity Connection, Pick-A-Party, Patient Imagination, and the BCI signature 'Imagine Me' Bedroom Makeovers.  The BCI personalized theme bedroom makeover is one of the greatest ways to lift a child's spirit and create a space filled with love, optimism, happiness, hope, and healing.
  • Inpatient Programs - New Patient Care Bags, Holiday Smiles, Adopt-A-Family, and Patient Party Times, which are parties held in a hospital setting that bring laughter and fun to the patient's bedside.
  • Blood & Marrow Drives - BrittiCares hosts annual Blood and Marrow drives to create awareness regarding the prevalence of childhood cancer, leukemia, sickle cell anemia, other serious blood diseases, and the need for more blood donors.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Brittiana Smile For Life 5K Run/Walk is BCI's flagship cancer awareness and fundraising event powered by family and friends, volunteers, hospital, community, and celebrity supporters, along with a growing roster of generous sponsors - all of whom work in concert to change lives.

Days before the gentlemen of Dru Hill hit Australia for the first time in the group's history, they flew to Los Angeles to headline a concert dubbed as the "Old School Meets New Skool" to support the sophomore CD release of an up-and-coming R&B newbie known as Trueful.

While in LA, The Lilal Network Live From Hollywood caught up with Baltimore's favorite soulful quartet to chop it up about their new album INDRUPENDENCE DAY, their hit reality television series Keith Sweat's Platinum House on Centric TV, and the blossoming brotherhood among the members as they move on without original DH vocalist Woody and welcome new member Tao to the Dru Hill family.

Dru Hill Fun Facts:

DH is a multi-platinum selling group whose name is taken from a popular park in West Baltimore called Druid Hill Park.

DH performed at the 80th birthday celebration for former South African President Nelson Mandela.

DH manager Kevin Peck discovered the quartet at a local talent show in 1992 when the guys were just 14 years of age.
